Short film
A parable is a simple narrative scheme similar to alegory - it sketches a setting, describes an action, and shows the results. Moreover it uses personification of abstract concepts and put them into a dramatical play. The origins of allegory can be traced at least back to Homer and his use of personifications of Terror (Deimos) and Fear (Phobos).
In this short film I use a personification of Destiny and Coincidence - abstract concepts that can be traced within literary texts as both a general narative functions and historical constructs emerging from an act of human storytelling itself. Using a combination of filmmaking technique of animation, puppetery and 3D software, I transformed both of them into actors - dramatical figures represented by hands gesturing in an affective movement. Furthermore, I followed up my initial question - what if those two narrative figures met in one story plot? And what would be the concequences of clash of their straightforward actions?
In visual storytelling I focused on the possibilities of camera movement within a single shot film technique. Composing a rhytm of action and searching for sollutions how to transfer from one scene to another one, those became a primarly tasks in the whole creative process. Moreover I wanted to create a visual style that mimics a shadowplay. Due to that I dove deep into an exploration of 3D software render passes possibilities and combined them together in the final compositing process.
Video-installation
Within the next step of the process, the original short-film video material was transformed into a form of video-essay. My aim was to cut and edit the sequence following a structure of methaphor, which - in it´s own figurative language - describes a moment of change; wheter social or personal. Regarding to that, terms and concepts rooted in a corpus of Julia Kristeva´s psychoanalytical theory was cited and transformed into the dramatical play of anthropomorfized actors. Within that process the same method of narration and animation, that was used in an original short film, was applied.
With all that on mind I collaborated with Lenka Vojtíšková from Charle´s University Electronic culture and semiotics department, who is also an author of introductory text that acompanies the main sequence. You can enter the text in the → booklet.
I decided to work with such an abstract and poetical construction with an aim to adress an interpretative capacities of the viewer and the audience. Due to that I designed a cards connected with a participatory → web extension, which represetns a space of active inscription dedicated to this viewer. In consequences a shift out of a viewer´s passive position, that is constituted by traditional cinematography, is supossed.
